GAY PRIDE BUS – NATIONAL TOUR

Budget Rent-a-Car has come out of the closet and sponsored a “Pricilla Queen Of the Desert”-like Microbus to tour the country along with the GFSA (Gay Flag of South Africa).

“I am ecstatic about this project. We announced it on local TV in January of this year and since then I have been working on ways to make it a reality. We are glad to collaborate with Budget Rent-a-Car, spreading the message of Pride and tolerance, throughout the country, which is still facing the realities of corrective rape and homophobic violence. ”: said Eugene Brockman the designer of the GFSA who is also an active volunteer for Luleki Sizwe, an NPO which has succeeded getting the Department of Justice to set up an interim task team to tackle the issue of corrective rape and homophobia.

The bus will be completely wrapped in the Gay flag design and will turn heads as it partakes in the parade processions of both Nelson Mandela Bay and Jo’burg Pride Parades. The bus is set to depart from Cape Town on the 21st of September, fromwhere it will make waves as it travels, first along the Garden Route with a stop in Mossel Bay for an added event to promote the GFSA and the Budget PINK Bus.

The bus will then head for and take part in Nelson Mandela Bay Pride on the 24h of September before traveling to Johannesburg to join the procession of 20 000 parade goers. The bus is set to return to Cape Town on the 5th of October.

The colourful journey will be filled with vibrant people such as the designer of the GFSA, South Africa’s most photographed drag artist Ms. Lola Fine (known for her show-stopping costumes). There is also Ian Ollis, the most openly gay politician in Africa, Dylan Jack van Vuuren who is a well known gay blogger and one of South Africa’s top twitter personalities. Two gay publications are also set to join the tour as well as a few surprise celebrities who will hop on and off.

Mika Stefano who is a renowned celebrity gossip columnist and MTV / VUZU TV VJ will join the GFSA procession for Jo’burg pride in his busload of celebrities for a local TV station.

Lindsay Versfeld, Marketing and Partnership Manager of Budget Rent a Car South Africa mentioned that: “We are very proud to be supporting the Gay Community in this Journey with a “Pricilla Queen of the Desert” as we believe their message of spreading Pride and Tolerance is very important and one that is similar to Budget’s values!  We’re Pink all the way!”

Eugene Brockman concluded that: “Celebrating who you are, builds identity. This has been the aim of the GFSA. We hope to instill a sense of pride in being both South African and gay, lesbian or bi. By taking the Budget Pride Bus on the road, we’ll spread that message and encourage other South Africans to take pride in them selves too, whilst building tolerance. So look out for us on the road, hoot or wave and join in the fun!
